Public hearings

Sir, — I registered an objection to the lease by the Christchurch City Council of part of Rawhiti Domain to the local tennis club. The reasons for objecting are various. A major aspect is the continued dilution of open space in Christchurch and the refusal of the council to purchase more open space. Additionally, in this case the tennis club will pay less rent than a comparable private tennis club pays in rates. Obviously the tennis club altso has points of view it would like to put forward. Unfortunately, I cannot put my opinion forward at the public hearing since this has been set for 3 p.m. on April 3 when I am at work. This will also apply to many of the tennis club. What is the point of public hearings when the public cannot attend? Is the city plan to be debated in the same manner? —Yours, etc., RAY SPRING. March 28, 1980.
