Canterbury given $19M

The University of Canterbury Council was told yesterday that the university’s block grant for 1980 will be $19.43 million. Each year after that until 1984, it will decrease slightly. The Government makes a block grant for administration, salaries, equipment and materials, and cleaning every five years. The University Grants Committee then studies submissions from all the universities and ;-allocates money according , to their needs. Each university then divides the lump sum into an amount' for each year in the five years it covers. . The council received .'the information in the form of a letfer from the chairman of the ’University Grants Committee (Dr A; T. Johns). ; Ji* Dr Johns said that, small or zero: growth was expected in most universities in the next five'years, and only those in which enrolment growth was predicted would be given money for additional staff. for Canterbury will be $19.34 million; in 1982 it will be $19.6 million; 1983, $18.95 million; 'and in 1984, $18.74 million.

had been predicted that the’Canterbury enrolment would remain stable, and the university had not- been granted any funding for additional academic staff. In . addition to the block grant, the /university had been , allocated' an assessed income of about $1 million each 'year. The assessed income, was based, on the Government’s assumption that universities would increase their tuition fees annually by 15 per cent and would ask students to pay for more of the, services provided by the university. Procedures for increasing fees were the responsibility of each university after consultation with the Grants Committee.
