Successful fortnight for two top golfers

Canterbury’s two top women golfers, Sue Bishop and Adrienne Bond, completed a successful fortnight when they retained their provincial foursomes title at Avondale yesterday. Mrs Bishop won the Canterbury stroke title by 14 strokes a fortnight ago and more recently Mrs Bond won her first match-play championship. . However, the favoured pair did not get home without a struggle. After the morning round, played in pleasant conditions, they were only fourth, but when the weather turned sour early in the afternoon, they held their

game together better than the rest of the field and finished three strokes clear of Diane Ritchie and Sue Bradley, who were playing on their home course. The first round leaders were the cheerful Moana Lavery, of Amberley, and Billy Simpson (Rangiora), who started soundly with a round of 77. Two relative outsiders in the field, Kath Sullivan and Joan Wood (Harewood) trailed by one shot and a stroke further back were Mesdames Ritchie and Bradley. The title-holders were on 80. In the afternoon, the Russley pair of Mesdames Bis-

hop and Bond all but matched their morning score while the others had their hopes blown away in the wind and dashed by the rain. The next best score in the afternoon was 83 by two Canterbury Russell Grace members, Jeanette Ross and Sue Haydon. Leading scores were:— 161—Mesdames A. Bond and S. Bishop, 80,- 81. 164—Mesdames D. Ritchie and S. Bradley, 79, 85. 168— Mesdames D. Dobson. and W. Head, 82, 86; Mesdames K. Sullivan and J. Wood; 78, 90; Mesdames. ’M. Drinnan and B. Rogers, 81, ‘ 87. 169— Mesdames M. Lavery and G. Simpson, 77, 92; Mesdames S. Haydon and J. Ross, 86, 83. 172—Mesdames J. Lewis and J. Bensehop, 82, 90.
