Clean-cut victory

Canterbury’s best performed indoor bowler. Alf Williamson, started the 1980 season the right way with a clear victory in the Brian Stewart singles at the week-end. ■Williamson’s command of weight, and his greater, versatility, were too much for Ngaire Tomlinson, and a final marked by fine drawing ..from both players went to Williamson, 12-3. In the close-sought semifinals, Williamson beat Eric Tebay 11-7. and Tomlinson beat Wayne McCreanor. 7-5. From the 240 entries, 92 qualified, and among those who failed to reach post-section play were two former New Zealand singles champions, Lloyd Bellis and Gary Barnes.
