P.D.L. Industries, Ltd, Christchurch-based electrical manufacturer, has concluded negotiations with Gerard Industries Pty, Ltd, of Australia, manufacturer of the Clipsal' range of electrical accessories to Manufacturer in New Zealand a range of weatherproof electrical fittings for Australia and New Zealand markets. I P.D.L. Industries will also [assemble and market in New [Zealand a range of polycarbonate high impact plas[tie switches and switch 'sockets currently marketed [in Australia by Clipsal. I This move supplements P.D.L.’s already wide range "of accessories, and will fulfil a requirement in commercial and . institutional projects where high impact plastic is specified, the company says. P.D.L. ' Industries at present exports 20 per cent of its total output.
Having regard to the lack of skilled engineering tradesmen in this country, the total development of new products up to recent times has been for the Asian company — P.D.L. (Azia-Send-irian Berhad. PJ9.L. (Aisa) Sendirian- Berhad in Kuala Lumpur, West Malaysia, employs approximately 100 people assembling electrical accessories from C.K.D. kitsets supplied from Christchurch. The deterioration in the building industry in New Zealand did not warrant
; tooling new products specifiicially for the New Zealand I market so in November an !approach was made to Gerrard Industries Pty, Ltd, of South Australia, for two reasons — '■ . 1) There was an apparent thrust between the Australian and New Zealand governments for an economic association between the two countries.
(2) It .appeared an idea] way of rationalising equipment between the two countries and increasing our exports back to Australia. The New Zealand government has granted P.D.L. a substantial licence to import C.K.D. kitsets from Gerard Industries; this was justified on the basis that P.D.L. would undertake a joint manufacturing programme which w’ould show a net 1
-: export result back to Gerard I [lndustries in its favour. This i [programme is under way. ■! P.D.L. sees this as a fore- '! runner of association be- ■ [tween New Zealand and [Australian manufacturers out-j (side the N.A.F,T.A. agree-.' [ment, and hidden advantages! • ! are quickly becoming appar-j ‘sent through such an associ-j Hation. For instance,- GerardIndustries has an immediate [ [New Zealand distribution! [system through P.D.L. and! • consequently any products! we release" through Gerard! Industries are immediately integrated into its Australian /network. | Mr Robert Gerard, managing director of Gerard .Industries, and Mr John[ Harris, sales director, are I visiting New Zealand this; [month to help release thismew range of products.
