Surgeon’s wife to be lashed
A British surgeon’s wife has been sentenced to a public flogging in Saudi Arabia for’ contravening?/.the. strict, alcohol laws there,. the British Foreign Office’ has said. A spokesman said Mrs iPenelope Arnot -had been 'sentenced to 80 lashes by a court ih Jiddaifor serving al-I’coholic-dnnks at a party at which a British nurse and a Dutchman'died. Mrs' Arnot’s husband,
Richard, had served five months in prison of a onevear sentence for the same offence, the spokesman said. The Foreign Office is trying to save Mrs Arnot from the ordeal.
The sentence imposed on the . couple arose from a party: at their, .rented . flat last Mav. when a 23-year-old nursef . Helen : Smith, -and . a young Dutch construction worker died after falling from a fifth-floor window.
