Roseanne O’Rourke, aged 19, of Sydney, admires some of the 20 chicks which were almost fried before their time in the window of a Christchurch shop last evening. The chicks, part of a live display in the window of Teddy’s Toy Shop, at

656 Colombo Street, all but brought about their own demise when they scratched up a pile of sawdust under a heating light soon after pan. . Fortunately a pedestrian saw smoke billowing from the sawdust, and alerted the Fire Service.

Two engines and the Fire Service’s snorkel unit- responded to the call, and firemen were able to save the shop and the chicks, which seemed unaffected by- the smoke. A smoke • extractor cleared the shop. There was no damage.
