Woman's claim granted

A young woman whose car was hit by' a drum belonging to the Christchurch Drainage,. Board during the storm on January 2 has received .compensation from the board.< Miss Betty van Vugt was driving along Fitzgerald Avenue about midnight when the accident occurred. The drum, standing beside a board sewer renewal site, was caught up in a wind gust and careered into her car, in spite of her attempts to avoid it.

Compensation was not given immediately because the board’s insurance company denied legal liability. Because she was under 25, Miss wan Vugt would have had to pay the first $l5O damages under her own insurance policy. “At first my claim was refused by everybody but, because I persisted, 1 have got my compensation,” Miss van Vugt said.- “I want other people under 25 and in the same : boat to know 1 was successful.

“These people are told that because of their age they have to pay everything for themselves. It is hard, especially when you are totally innocent.” Miss van Vugt’s cheque for $68.50 arrived in the mail on Saturday.
