Roger Robinson runs to splendid double

A splendid 5000m-10,000m l double ov the former British! cross-country representative, Roger Robinson (Victoria University), in the men's 40-44 age group was just one of many outstanding performances in the Air New Zealand-sponsored New Zealand veteran track and field championships at Queen Elizabeth Il Park on Saturday and yesterday. Robinson, who spent several years in Christchurch before moving to Wellington, won tlie 5000 m on Saturday in lamin 10.3 sec from the Christchurch runner. Vic Sykes. This was half a second faster than the championship record. Yesterday. Robinson led all the wav for another resounding victory, this time in the 10.000 m. Tlte high temperatures and windy conditions took a heavy toll on the veteran runners, but Robinson still recorded the worthy time of 33min 40sec. Sykes, the 1500 m champion in his grade, was again the runner-up. “I took it fairly quietly,” Robinson said later. “I had to work fairly hard in the 5000 m on Saturday, and it was very hot out there today.” . „ Robinson, still not back to full fitness after twice breaking ribs in separate incidents a few months'ago, will return to England in May for a holiday, but intends to be back in New Zealand in time for the world veteran championsnips at Christchurch early next year. John Macdonald (Canterbury Olympic) was another in great form in the distance events. Running in tile 45-49 age group, he won the 5000 m on Saturday in the excellent time of 15min 30.3 sec, lopping 10 seconds off the record held by the former

Olympic representative, Barry Magee. Yesterday, Macdonald won the 10,000 m in his grade in another fine run.

Jim Macdonald (Canterbury Olympic), his brother, was second in the 45-49 5000 m, but proved too fast for his rivals in the 800 m, 1500 m and the 3000 m steeplechase. His time of 4mln 6sec in the 1500 m took an astonishing 24 seconds off tlie record. In the steeplechase, his lOmin 7sec was inside the record by almost a minute. The gold medal winner in tbe six miles at tlie 1930 Commonwealth Games in Auckland, Harold Nelson (Nelson), showed some of his old ability by winning the 55-59 3000 m steeplechase in the record time, cf 13min O.asec. The 1954 Commonwealth Gamesi representative, Jim Daly (Hamilton). re-lived some of his former moments of glory with wins in the 800 m and 1500 m in the 55-59 grade. Tile former All Black, Bruce McPhail (Ashburton), was outstanding in the 40-44 age group sprints. He won • the 100 m in 11.735ec, the 200 m in 24.365ec, and the 400 m in 54.525ec. He also finished first in the high jump and long jump. Alan Tucker (Old Bcys-Te Kura) was also in good sprinting ,'orm. He won the preveteran 200 m, 400 m and high jump (1.71 m Peter Wells (Canterbury Veterans), who settled in New Zealand after representing England in the 1950 Commonwealth Games at Auckland, won the 50-54 high jump with an impressive leap of 1.59 m. Dave Leech (Canterbury University), a Commonwealth Games representative at Perth won the 50-54 hammer bj’ a wide margin with a throw of 38.68 m.

Avis Mclntosh (Massey), a bronze medallist in the 1962 Commonwealth" Games 80m hurdles, showed that she had retained much of her old style with -a win in the 40-44 100 m hurdles in 13.255ec. In the 100 m sprint she li ad to be content with second to Annette Horsnell (Christchurch Technical), who recorded 13.175ec. Mrs Horsnell also won the 200 m. : Pauline Woolman (Olympic) had a successful meeting, winning three titles—4oom, 800 m, and 1500 m—in the 35-39 group. However, the most prolific winner of the two days was Christine Sole (Inglewood), who won seven titles in the preveteran grade—loom (12.935ec), 200 m (26.325ec), 400 m (59.395ec), 800 m (2min 29.8 sec), 100 m hurdles (15.585ec). high jump (1.45 m and long jump (5.58m)._ Sallv Mene (Christchurch Technical), still the holder of the national women’s javelin record, broke the pre-veteran record by 17.91 m with her winning throw of 37.70 m—a performance up to the highest standards in open competition.
