The police arrested 11 people as violent clashes erupted .during a demonstration against the Prime Minister (Mr Fraser) in Melbourne yesterday. A number of demonstrators, and at least one policeman, were injured as vicious fighting broke out in the 500-strong crowd. A young policeman who was helping to; put a demonstrator into _ a brawler van emerged with blood streaming from his head. A middle-aged man with raw bum marks beneath his arms was dragged, apparently un-
conscious, into a divisional .van.
Mr and Mrs Fraser had earlier been pelted with a variety of missiles, including 'eggs, tomatoes, potatoes, and apples, as they arrived to open the Melbourne City Mission’s Harold McCracken nursing home for the aged. The opening ceremony was moved from outside the home to the nearby Uniting Church, away from the demonstrators and out of a light rain. Mr Fraser had performed the ceremony, and had walked- through a protected lane to have afternoon tea in the home when the violence broke out
