Woolston takes title

Woolston W.M.C. has emerged as the winner of the Christchurch Suburban Cricket Association’s senior competition for the 1979-80 season, .and it was its first such victory. Tension mounted throughout the afternoon on Saturday at St James Park. Garrick Park, and Sumner, as first Harewood beat Southern Districts outright to move into the lead with 31 points. Then, at Garrick Park, and with only 40 minutes of the season left. Woolston defeated Boon Hav outright and moved into the lead with 86 points. Finally, if Sumner had won, the championship would have bein theirs with 91 points, but Merivale-Papanui instead won outright, by a mere seven runs, and the title was Woolston's.

Sumner declared at its overnight score of 75 for seven, and in its second innings. MerivalePapantii declared leaving Sumner 189'to win outright. After it was 26 for two, Roger Campbell and Tony McKendry had a very fruitful 'partnership before the next wicket fell. Eventually Sumner missed its target by eight runs.

Woolston W.M.C. continued its first innings and declared 24 runs behind, Hoon Hay collapsing in its second innings to be out for 68. with only John Neilson showing any resistance. Needing 93 runs to win. Woolston achieved this for the loss of only two wickets. Harewood beat Southern Districts outright as expected. Southern Districts, after being 29 for two overnight. ■■ lost two more wickets without addition to its score and was soon 37 for eight. However. Steve. Holden (571 and Karl Slave <l7l added 62 for the ninth wicket, while Graham Gadsby finished with six for 39. Requiring 33 to win. after Upper Riccarton continued its first innings to 358. For Hornby, Graham Cole finished with four for 61. When the game finished. Hornby had scored 176 for eight. Bob Kerr having scored 69.
