Objections to pop song
Sir, — Your -headline (March 27) “Pop song upsets Catholics” is somewhat misleading. The Christchurch Diocesan Pastoral Council which, according to your report, is composed of “lay Roman Catholics” has laid an egg, but surely it is too much to plaster the egg over all Catholic faces, even if it is Easter. In charity may I - beg your readers to allow this minority Catholic group the human privilege of error based on ignorance? They mean well, and while that in itself is by no means an excuse, it certainly is a reason. In the meantime let us enjoy Jon Stevens’s song, and trust Mr Templeton to give the protest the rejection it deserves. To the council I would strongly advise an urgent course in primary class biology before re-evaluating the complained-of lyrics. — Yours, etc., ■ , R. P. DALZIEL. March 27, 1980. Sir, — The Roman Catholic Christchurch Diocesan Pastoral Council is to be commended for protesting against the smut we are subjected to. Sex, like religion is something personal and should not be forced on people. — Yours, etc., N. SMITH. March 27, 1980. Sir, — If the pop song, “Jezebel,” is upsetting Roman Catholics, then why are the poems of James K. Baxter not considered to-be at least reprehensible? — Yours, etc., ROSIE WITTY. March 27, 1980.
