Mini-world softball tourney

New Zealand will be trying hard to improve its third world ranking in- women’s softball when it competes in the mini-world series at Brisbane from April 2 to 9. The team, which leaves for Australia on Saturday, contains two Canterbury players — the Burnside pitcher-catcher combination of Cheryl Kemp and Penny Salton.

Also competing are Australia, two teams from the United States together with Canada and Japan. After the New Zealand team arrives it will have three days of intensive training before starting tournament play. Two round robins will be contested until April 8 when the top four teams start playing off. New Zealand’s first game is on April 2 against the San Diego Trendsetters. The rest of the roundrobin draw is:— April 3: v. Japan and Canada. April 5: v. Phoenix Westerners and Australia. April 6: v. Japan and Canada. April 7: v; Australia and Phoenix Westerners. April 8: v. San Diego Trendsetters. It is the first time Salton has represented New Zea-l land, whereas Miss Kemp first played for New Zealand as a 16-year-old in 1973 when she played a big part in the team’s series win against Australia.
