GM hopes to export more axles
General Motors, Ltd, of
New Zealand, hopes to increase its trans-Tasman export sales of rear axle housings to $7 million this year, according to the managing director (Mr. R. W. Kirkman). General Motors began exporting the housings — used in Australian-manufactured Holdens — last year, shipping out S6M worth. Mr Kirkman said some of the components would be reimported into New Zealand in completely knocked-down car packs, and would be assembled at General Motors Trentham plant. General Motors first looked at the component export market about nve years ago and now hoped to sell parts in other countries. “We’re now looking for other opportunities to supply axle housings to Japan and the United States — not necessarily to other G.M. companies — and there may even be scope for our manufacturing capacity to be used by some of our local competitors,” Mr Kirkman said.
