Tax on boats for Sea Scouts

Sir, — I have read with concern your reports on the difficulties the Sea Scouts are having in obtaining an exemption from sales tax on new boats. Mrs Hercus has hit the nail on the head in referring to this as “mindless bureaucracy.” It seems incredible that this organisation should even have to ask for an exemption, and utterly unforgivable for the Minister of Customs to refuse. I doubt that there would be a single one of the Prime Minister’s “ordinary blokes” who would countenance the sales taxing of essential equipment of this kind for a charitable organisation of such benefit to the community. Tn reality it is probably some bureaucrat in the Customs Department who is causing the problem, and the Minister' is likely nothing more than a hand on the rubber sthmp. It is time the matter was reconsidered on the basis of pure common sense instead of departmental expediency. — Yours, etc., R. OPIER. March 27, ISSQ, •_
