Eating and smoking on buses

Sir, — Mrs Margaret Humphreys, an Australian visitor asked (March 14) why smoking is allowed on Road Services buses and not food consumption. I wrote to Dr; Hay, president of -the Heart Foundation, and the' Minister of Health’ on this matter; both’ agree that it is a health problem rather than a hygiene one. Mr Schreiber’s answer was that his department is considering a choice of compartment. Any’, system ridding bus interiors of cigarette smoke is fruitless unless a continual flow of fresh air is circulated. Choice of compartment is also; useless unless closed off. My suggestion is that the ash trays be removed from the backs of seats so reducing the vile smell of stale butts and -that a notice be placed explaining that ample time .will be given for; both eating and smoking when the usual convenient stop Js reached, — Yours, etc. NAOMI HARDING. ; Timaru. ) March 25,1980. r.
