Square changes opposed

A “green ban” might be Imposed by the Canterbury Trades Council to stop the Christchurch City Council proceeding with a proposal to nut roads through Cranmer Square and Latimer Square. After a long discussion at the Trade Council’s monthly meeting last evening, a resolution was passed to oppose any alteration to the squares.

The Trades Council’s secretary (Mr L. G. Morel) said that realigning roads to run through the squares was “totally unnecessary.” He said it would be of no benefit to motorists and would spoil two “splendid parks.” The Trades Council thought that any money the City Council was considering using to realign the roads would be better spent improving substandard streets in Christchurch.

The opposition would first take the form of written submissions to the City Council, and if that failed to stop the proposal, the Trades Council would consider imposing a “green ban” on the squares, Mr Morel said.
