Roydon Scott ‘on trial’ for Easter Cup

By W. R. CARSTON

If Roydon Scott is going to be one of the major contenders for Easter Cup honours next week—and in many quarters he is already regarded as the likely winner of that $20,000 event—he will need to win or, at least, go close in the Lion Invitation Stakes at Addington Raceway tomorrow night. And a Roydon Scott at his brilliant best, and with an ounce of luck in the running, should not find it too difficult to improve his winning record this season in the first leg of the N.Z. Metropolitan Trotting Club’s T.A.B. double.

Roydon Scott has failed to make a major contribution to his record in three starts since he resumed after being sidelined by injury last November,. But there was every sign that he was fast approaching his peak again when he gained an impressive all-the-way win at the Wednesday trials at Addington last week. Roydon Scott shares the 10m mark with Sapling, another on the short list of Easter Cup fancies and one from which a bold effort is expected tomorrow night.

Luck in the first 200 m or so in what is almost certain to be a fast-run 2000 m is sure to have a vital bearing on Roydon Scott’s and Sapling’s chances. If either, or both, strike traffic problems, that will strengthen the prospect of Bronze Queen keeping a winning record at the meeting intact. She won the Addington Raceway Handicap in style on the first night last Saturday. That race“will have taken on added value if Idolmite is involved in the finish again. His powerful late run for third was one of the minor features of that event.

Of the others, Timely Robin, beaten into fifth but far from disgraced after pacemaking on the first night, and the newcomers. Westburn Vue, Trevira and Flora Dor, appeal most. There will be no fancy double prices if Tempest Tiger keeps a winning record moving, and that seems likely, in the second leg, the Canterbury Handicap. Tempest Tiger will be going for her eighth win of the season and her third in a row against some pretty stiff opposition. Although Ascot Fair and Karleda Maid, off the front, rate some consideration, the chances are that Tempest Tiger’s strongest rivals will come from among her comarkers on 10m. The top prospects, next, to Tempest Tiger, in this group are likely to be Crossfire and Philippa Frost, both placegetters in last Saturday’s Addington Raceway Handicap, and Individualist, a dual winner in the north recently.

RACE 7 T.A.B. DOUBLE 9.25 p.m.— LION INVITATION STAKES $6000; OC; 2000 m. 1 0780 MISS PERT (1) It (8m Waratah —Tania Jane). Weak effort last Saturday night and would need to improve considerably to be a major threat. J. Carter 2 8400 JASCOE (2) It (8m Armbro Hurricane—Boutique). Finding it an uphill battle to improve on a fairly bleak record since she reached this grade. J. Carmichael 3 3600 LORDABLE (3) It (6g Lordship—Debatable:. Another whose recent form does nothing to raise enthusiasm. Would have to improve out of sight.

M. Butt 4 - 2685 WESTBURN VUE (4) It (6ra Lumber Dream—Bellevue). Fair effort in looser class on this course last time out and could be at improving stage. Looks place chance, at least. 5 7224 TREVIRA (5) It (6g Scottish Command—Vonnelli. This is probably a bit short of his best distance but will still command respect on the strength of some sound recent form. R. Brosnan 6 1510 FLORA DOR (6) It (3m Canny Scot—Lin Dori. This is likely to be her toughest test yet but has shown in the past her best is very good. Not one to bypass without a second thought. K. Townley 7 0080 ALEC PETERSON (7) it <6g True Averil—Anne Peterson). Record has been bleak since his last winning run at Methven in the spring. Others preferred. E. Pyecroft 8 5597 WEE WIN (8) It (7h Out To Win—Foaming Lassi. Racing well below his best standard and consequently hard to fancy although his best is very good. W. Butt 9 9343 IDOLMITE (9) It (5m Local Light—Lady Melling). Powerful late run to finish third to Brdnze Queen last Saturday was one of minor features of Addington Handicap. Looks one of brighter hopes. C. de Filippi 18 5715 TIMELY ROBIN (10) It (5h Timely Knight—Robin’s Sister). Run down late after pacemaking on first night. Hasn't the best of draws but could be hard to peg back over the shorter journey here. P. Jones 11 3821 BRONZE QUEEN (11) If '7m Local Light—ldisi. Improved consistent record with impressive victory on first night. Hardly ever runs a poor one and sure to be around-about it again at the finish.

M. Edwards 12 1054 ROYDON SCOTT (1) 10 (5g Scottish Hanover— Roydon Dream). Campaigned unsuccessfully at Auckland last month but made a big impression with all-the-way win at trials last week and could be the one to beat at this distance. W. Fletcher i 13 1139 SAPLING (2) 10 (6h| Young Charles—Haakon-I dahl). Soundly beaten in New Brighton Cup last) time out but high-class performer with sound form close up on his record and could be a different proposition at this distance. H. making 8 tdnnirtg bid. Entitled to be one of top fancies.

D. Nyhan 2 0006 KINGSDOWN CAVALIER (2) It (8 g RembrandtClever Helen). Improved effort on this ' course last time out but still likely to be at lucrative odds. L. Curry 4 2794 CROSSFIRE (1) 10 <6 g Tarport Coulter—Margaret Marie). Made a lot of ground for fourth, on first night and must take beating this time if he repeats the performance.

T. Thompson 5 2352 PHILIPPA FROST (1) 10 (4 m. Armbro Hurricane— Tiny Frost). Usual honest effort when runner-up to Bronze Queen on first night. Looks one of top chances again

W. Fleteher 8 9929 SAIL AGAIN (2) 10 (8 g Armbro Del—Set Sail). Failed to make much impression on first night after good second in Cheviot Cup the previous week. Seems to go best on the grass tracks.

R. Brosnan 7 1211 TEMPEST TIGER (4) 10 14 m Tiger Wave—Lumber’s Sister:. All-the-way winner over 2000 m last week and looks like being a shortpriced favourite again.

J. Smolensk! 8 3606 MERRY CHASE (5) 10 (5 m Good Chase—Red Square). Did not do badly after being forced over a lot of extra ground on the first night. Tough, busy campaigner.

L. Thomas 9 2811 INDIVIDUALIST (6) 10 (4 m Adover Rainbow — Seattle). Last two starts have yielded wins in the Cambridge Gold Cup and a mile at Thames last Saturday night. Should be hard to beat again.

J. Noble 11 8000 PORT VIEW (8) 10 (7 m Tarport Coulter — Light View). Makes little appeal on anything she has shown this season. Latest in lengthy list of failures was on this course . last Tuesday fortnight.

P. Jones 12 4000 FALLIMENTO (9) 10 (6 h Honest Master—Cameo). Comes up with the odd good run but hard to fancy on anything he has done lately.

R. Johnstone 13 7698 JOHNNY REGALO (10) 10 « h Regal Yankee—Roschiara). Failed to run on after appearing to have every chance on first night. Not racing well enough to commend with confidence. K. Chapman 14 7430 BE SLY (1) 20 (5 h Sly Yankee—Lady Ngaire). Failed to make much impression last week when against stronger opposition. Might go better but on tough mark.

R. McNally 15 0600 ALLSPICE (2) 20 (5 g Estes Minbar — Allakasam). Has his moments but nothing he has done lately has raised hopes of a victory close at hand.

F. Newfield 16 00 SMOKEY LOPEZ (3) 20 <7 g Lopez Hanover—Regality). Failed in two starts earlier in season and this win be first race since New Year’s Day. Others preferred.

J. Carmichael Scratched: Game Adios, Karleda Maid.
