Pinochet sacks Foreign Minister
NZPA-Reuter Santiago The Chilean President (General Augusto Pinochet) has sacked his Foreign Minister (Mr Hernan Cubillos) after the President’s abortive, tour of the South Pacific. A Government communique said General Pinochet, who returned after a surprise cancellation of a visit to the Philippines, demanded the resignation of his Foreign Minister. General Pinochet flew back to Santiago after demonstrators pelted his car with eggs in Suva, Fiji, and the Philippines abruptly cancelled his five-day visit to the island republic. On his return to Santiago General Pinochet said the cancellation was an intolerable slap in the face for Chile and he would break diplomatic relations with the Philippines. In Manila, the Government said the visit had been cancelled because it discovered foreign-.terrorists had come to thei Philippines to assassinate General Pinochet. This contrasted with the cancellation announcement on Saturday, which said President Ferdinand Marcos had to attend -urgent business outside the capital. General Pinochet had hoped tha' the trip would be the beginning of a new diplomatic drive to end Chile’s isolation and provide trade opportunities in the Far East. The general is still due to visit Japan and other Eastern countries later this vear.-
