Port View does best

By

PAUL MEIN

Port View came out best! in the main trial at Addington yesterday, a race which gave little insight into Saturday’s Invitation Stakes or next week’s Easter Cup. Westburn Vue (second) and Flora Dor (third), trialled the best of those entered in the Invitation Stakes.

Alec Peterson (seventh), Wee Win (tenth) and Lordable (eleventh), were the only other first-leg starters to perform.

Port View sat without cover mostly and ran on best to beat the fast finishing Westburn Vue by a head, with three-quarters of a length to Flora Dor which pulled hard for Kevin Towney who set a leisurely pace in front. Sovereign, three back on the rails, was fourth, with Smokey Lopez making ground for fifth.

Port View, off 10m in the Canterbury Handicap, paced the distance in a slow 3min 33.15, the final 800 m in 60.65. Wee Win careered wildly to the outside at the start and lost all chance. TWO-YEAR-OLDS i El Regale and Nuclear Hanover, race rivals in the Second Graduation Stakes, were respective winners of the two-year-old heats. El Regale was most impressive. The El Patron colt (trailed early, shot to the lead with 700 m to run and cruised io the line four I lengths clear of Toshack in |2min 43.15. Cheval Du Roi, which led] out, then trailed from the] 1100 m, held third with Lomondu Host fourth. ! Nuclear Hanover (Jersey Hanover-Tommy’s Girl) sat I in the open in the second iheat, but still mustered ’enough speed to beat the fast-finishing No Regrets by a head. Captain Padero was a neck back, third. SCOTCH TAR WINS [ Scotch Tar was again suc[cessful, coming through on the rails to win the main heat for trotters. The six-year-old won by a neck from Alias Armbro which finished solidly from three

places back, with Crafty Key fading to fourth in the-' five horse field. < Scotch Tar trotted the dis-] tance in 3min 36.15, the' final 800 m in 61.8 s and] 400 m in 61.85, and was l going easily at the line. > Regal Cheval led through-] out her heat to win comfort-j ably by a length and a half] from Nandina Maestro,] which trailed, with two and a half lengths to Reuben Janies, third. Dor Favori finished welli for fourth with Wickliffe] running on for fifth. Kiltie Boy’s chances in thei N.Z. Trotting Stakes bright-] ened with a fine win in the; first trotter’s heat. The Gerry Mir colt trailed the pacemaking Abbe Eden throughout and ran on strongly over the final 200 m to win going away by half a length. A race rival, Lord Zetland, was a fine second after sitting in the open and Abbe Eden third. Triambro, another Trotting Stakes contender broke short of the line when looking the winner of the second trotter’s heat, a race won by Norice Wave in a dawdling 3min 45.15.

Lord Fernando hurried home from midfield to win the first of three heats for CO-C2 pacers, a run which bodes well for the Second Three-year-old Stakes on Saturday night. Lord Fernando narrowly, beat his race rival, Cyllarus, with Stop The Clock third. Thunder Road and Frosty Lopez took out the other two minor heats, Frosty Lopez winning by a length and a quarter from All Time High in 3min 31.95, the final 400 m in 30s, Thunder Road leading virtually throughout, seeing it out by half a length from Berry Picker, the time a slumbering 3min ;38S.
