Ballinger bags smallbore gold

In spite of shooting a score of eight points below his first-day effort, the prominent Christchurch marksman, lan Ballinger, won the gold medal in the smallbore class at the South Pacific regional shooting championships at ■ McLeans Island yesterday. ' Ballinger began the second round with- a five-point lead, and consistent shooting, including one possible of 100, in gusty winds enabled him to win the open title by two points from his fellow New Zealand representative, Brian Lacey. Lacey gave a fine display to score 590, including two scores of 100, but his firstround effort of 576 left him too much ground to make up. The third-placed Australian, Clayton Frederick, was in a similar position to Lacey. A poor first round of 574 was followed by a score of 589 yesterday, and he finished three points behind Lacev. ■ However, the outstanding performance of the contest came from the New Zealand unde r-25 representative, Stephen Petterson. With a first round score of 580 behind him, Petterson produced excellent shooting

yesterday and had scores of 97, 99, 99, 95, 98, and 99, for 587 The New Zealand A team also won the teams’ match with a total of 4652 points. In the running boar class. New Zealand had a good win in the teams’ event over Australia, by 1442 to 1373. Wayne Williams again stood out for New Zealand, heading off the Australian, Alan Moskwa, in the individual scores. Australian shooters handled the testing conditions yesterday at the Christchurch Gun Club’s Yaldhurst Range better than the New Zealand competitors, and look set to take the teams’ trophy when the skeet contest concludes today. Australians fill four of the top five places after the first stage of 100 birds had been shot yesterday, as thd swirling wind wrecked scores. , , / Birds from tire high house were particularly affected by the conditions, and only three shooters managed possibles. • ’ ' The experienced Australian shooter, lan Hale, led the 18-strong field after four visits to the traps. Hale looked likely to post

a very high score after three shots, but he crashed and scored a mediocre 21 in his last round to finish on 94. The Commonwealth Games gold medallist and top New Zealand prospect, John Woolley, was a bird behind Hale, together with Alex Crikis (Australia). Two other Australians, Graham Boyd and Barry Nelis, completed the day on 92, while Jean-Paul Constentin (New Caledonia) made a dramatic improvement on his Badge score on Thursday to finish on 91. Others on 91 included the New Zealand pair of Peter Lassen and Brian Webber; the latter was the only member of the New Zealand team to shoot a possible. Alex Taransky, the talented Australian, took his second championship title yesterday by winning the rapid fire contest by three shots from . another Australian, John Tremelling. : The best New Zealander was Bruce McMillan in sixth place with scores of 287 and 279, for a total of 566. Tremelling had a one-point win in the air pistol badge match yesterday, the first day. of competition in the class. However, high hopes are held for the Aucklander,

Barrie Wickens, who. finished third equal with Philip Adams of Australia, four points behind Tremelling. Results:— SMALLBORE (second 60 shots and final total) I. Ballinger (N.Z.) 580, 1168, 1; S.
