280 employees to lose jobs
Storemen, drivers, and clerks at the High Street warehouse of Kempthorne Medical Supplies, in Christchurch, will lose their jobs next month.
Kempthorne Medical Supplies vis owned by the New Zealand Farmers' Fertiliser Company, Ltd, which announced yesterday that it will, .'.dose its nation-wide pharmaceutical wholesale distribution network. About 280 employees will be laid off.
It is not known how many of the staff in' Christchurch will'lose their jobs. Some may be offered jobs in other parts, of the company. The
unions were notified of the decision yesterday, and redundancy talks are expected to begin today. The largest number of employees is in Auckland (75) and the company has a total of 16 wholesale warehouses. Most of the workers are members of the Storemen and Packers’ Union and the Clerical Workers’- ' Union. Some are members of the Advertising Representatives’ Guild. In Wellington about 10 clerical' workers, 25 warehouse staff and three drivers are affected. Company’s reasons, Page 27
