Elderly man found stabbed to death

PA Auckland An elderly man found dead in his bedsitter in Ponsonby Road. Auckland, on Mondav evening had been stabbed in the chest and neck several times.

Detectives investigating the killing yesterday were working on the theory that the man might have been robbed. He was

Arthur Victory Shierny, aged 64, a glass worker, who lived alone.

Detective Inspector R. I. Chadwick said that Mr. Shierny, who was last seen

at work on Friday, was known to carry large sums of cash.

A constable who climbed through a window found Mr Shierny lying on the kitchen floor with a big carving knife protruding, from his chest.

His head was against a refrigerator and his feet were less than a metre from his locked front door.

A parcel of meat, several days old, and last Thursday’s newspaper were found near the body. Mr Chadwick said that a

post-mortem ’ examination had failed to establish the time of death, but the police believed he might have been killed on Friday night or possibly later. His body was discovered just after 7 p.m. when the police were called to the tiny downstairs bedsitter by neighbours in adjoining flats in the old converted house.

The neighbours, who share communal bath and toilet facilities near Mr Shiemy’s front door, were concerned because he had not been seen for three days.
