Fruit falls at Loburn

Some Loburn orchardists have suffered considerable financial loss as a result of Monday’s strong north-west wind.

The Ministry of Agriculture at Rangiora said yesterday that growers who did not have shelter were the worst affected. Varieties of Cox’s Orange, Splendour, and Granny Smith apples had been the hardest hit.

“There are quite a few windfalls about,” said a spokesman. Recently several very hot days damaged some of the fruit crop. “About 10 per cent of some varieties were affected by sunburn,” said a Ministry spokesman. “A lot of fruit was lost,”
