lan Dewe, shown filleting a groper, is one of 10 young men to take up the Fishing Industry Board’s offer to train young unemployed people in all aspects of fish handling. Ten Christchurch fish

shops have each engaged a youth for a trial period of a year, and if the scheme is successful it will be tried in other parts of New Zealand. The scheme is designed to provide a skilled workforce to overcome a short-

age and to prepare the industry for an expected expansion in domestic and export sales.

It is also seen as a way of reducing the number of young unemployed. The Labour Department invited applications for the trainee scheme. All the applicants were youths. They will be given time off by their employers to attend courses at the Christchurch Polytechnic and at the end of the year will sit their trade certificate. They will receive award wages, plus $lO a week 1 incentive bonus. Smaller shops with limited finances will be subsidised by the Government for the first six months.
