Shahwon appeals at Stratford

Special Correspondent New Plymouth Shahwon could improve a good record at Stratford today with a win in the Balmerino Handicap, first leg of the T.A.B. double at the Stratford Racing Clubs meeting. He won in very trying ground during the last Stratford meeting on January 3. Since then he has been sixth in the Marton Cup, and third and fourth at Trentham. His fourth in the George Adams, was a particularly fine effort. With luck the four-year-old could have'won. Shahwon has been freshened over the last few weeks but the gelding looks sure to race well. Prancer, although disappointing over recent weeks, is the class performer of the field and he might be an improver at fair odds. After her win in the Waikato Stayers’ Plate, Royal Intrigue, is entitled to respect also. Although Lisadell’s record suggests she is at her best on good ground, her win at Hawera was so impressive that she must be respected in the second leg, the Kentucky Beau Handicap. Bandalero was gallant in defeat behind Lisadell at Hawera, and he will appreciate easier footing which is likely today. He is sure to be handy for a long way. Noir Vitesse does not like soft ground and a better chance in these conditions would be Bold Venture, which finished well at Hawera. Selections:
