Ferries return to normal

PA Wellington Cook Strait ferry deck officers last evening manned their first night sailing in three weeks and planned to return to a normal schedule from today.

The Merchant Service Guild yesterday lifted its ban on the 11.40 p.m. sailing after a meeting of the union’s negotiators. The guild had been directed by the Shipping Industry' Tribunal on Monday to end the ban which was affecting 23 per cent of the New Zealand Railways in-ter-island freight movement.

The tribunal also directed the Railways Department to submit proposals to the guild within 21 days to resolve the relativity issue that led to the ban. The secretary of the guild (Captain J. W. Dickinson) said that after receiving an assurance from the department that firm proposals would be presented within the 21 days, it was agreed to resume normal sailings. The Railways had agreed that a settlement would be back-dated to the expiry of the guild’s award on Deember 24, he said. A spokesman for- the Railways said that a normal schedule would apply from today.
