Ferry ban end likely
PA:■ Wellington ■ Rail ferry deck officers are likely to drop their ban on-Cook Strait night sailings after a meeting of their union’s negotiators in Wellington this afternoon. Merchant Service Guild members on the ferries were told yesterday by the Shipping Industry Tribunal they must end their three-week ban.
The Railways Department, which requested the tribunal’s intervention, also received a directive. The tribunal said the disputed relativity issue between the deck officers and engineers should not have interupted sailings. It gave the department 21. days to submit a. set of proposals to the guild to resolve its claim that new rates paid to engineer. officers mean that deck-officers have to work longer hours for. the same pay.
