Man in the middle
The Christchurch umpire, Mr Fred. Goodall, at present New Zealand’s most experienced umpire, is standing in his fiftieth firstclass match, equalling the record set by the Wellington umpire, Mr Trevor Martin. Mr Goodall, a teacher at St Andrew’s College, is also standing in his twelfth test. In 1978, Mr Goodall spent half the English summer officiating in county matches, becoming the first New Zealander to take part in the scheme, organised by the International Cricket Conference, to bring overseas umpires into the English scene to increase their experience.
