Govt ‘not cold’ on ethanol production
PA Ashburton • The Government was “not: going cold” on the idea of ethanol production, said the under-secretary of Agriculture (Mr Talbot) yesterday. Mr Talbot said he recently had had discussions with the Minister of Energy (Mr Birch) who was keen to get ethanol production started. The Government was favourably considering a change in the law which would allow for the experimental distillation of ethanol from fodder beet or other feed stock, Mr Talbot said. I The law change would give : consortiums interested in en-, orgy farming another step ini investigating energy alternat-l ives. However, Mr Talbot- said that permission could only be given to experiment. Consortiums would need further authority to produce ethanol commercially. He hoped Mr Birch’s blueprint for energy farming would be made available “in the next month or two.” •THE PRESS’* . CLASSIFIEDS Phone 792-440
