Rugby career over
The rugby career of the Linwood and Canterbury lock, Robert Johns, has come to a premature ending because of injury. Johns, who at 24 probably had his best years ahead of him, tore the ligaments in a knee while playing in an end-of-season charity game at Oamaru last winter.
He has received medical advice that he could damage the leg permanently if he continues playing rugby. He has still to see another specialist, but it is unlikely that this will alter his retirement plan?.
Johns, a New Zealand Colt in 1976, came into the Canterbury 'side last year and performed very capably in the 10 games he had before Vance Stewart emerged from retirement.
His worth lay mainly in the heights he could reach in the line-outs, but he also had a very handy second string to his bow — as a goal-kicker. This is something Linwood will miss greatly, for in each of the last two seasons Johns has scored a century of points off his boot.
