The waters of the Waitaki River pour down the spillway of the Aviemore power station. The river is running high because of unseasonally high rainfall in its catchment area. To prevent flooding, the spillway at Benmore Dam is releasing water at a rate of 25 cubic metres per second, requiring the spillways at the Aviemore and Waitaki Dams downstream to be opened.
