Unions 'do little on working conditions’

’Most New Zealand trade unions are doing little for better working conditions, the southern section of the Chartered Institute of Transport has been told in Christchurch. ’ “Generally speaking, the unions I have had experience with seem to be concerned primarily with money and the award system rather than safety a'spects,” said the senior safety officer of the Accident Compensation Commission in Christchurch

(Mr J. Nieman) to a meeting of institute members. “I feel that unions are not using themselves properly; they could do a lot more to foster better working situations and job satisfaction,” he said. Some unions in some areas were wanting to send delegates to training courses, but the numbers were .minimal. Those who had not yet changed to this way of thinking were far behind the times, Mr Nieman said.
