Regional golf to Chch
An excellent performance by the Christchurch club’s intermediate champion, Stewart Betty, helped his team to win the Canterbury regional final of the Peter Stuyvesant national club golf championship at Waimairi Beach yesterday. The 36-hole event, decided on aggregate stableford (without handicap) was won by Christchurch by four shots from Harewood with Coringa six strokes behind in third place. John Williamson, replacing an injured Geoff Saunders as the Christchurch senior representative, had useful scores of 33 and 35 stableford points, but Betty, after contributing 29 in the morning, added a match-win-ning 33 points in the afternoon. Peter Phelan, the junior champion, played his part with two consistent rounds and 45 points.
Templeton held the lead after the first IS holes with 86 points, two ahead of Christchurch with Harewood on 83 and Coringa 81. But the Templeton team faltered in the afternoon and Christchurch, with 91, took the second round honours from Harewood (88) and the overall .victory. The individual honours went to the. Waimairi Beach senior champion, Fred Poskitt, who was trying to win the regional final for his club for a second successive year. He totalled 74 points,
two ahead of Waitikiri’s Gary Maw. Leading teams were:— Christchurch 175 (J. N. Williamson 33, 35; J. S. Betty 29, 33; P. Phelan 22. 23). Harewood 171 (M. E. Street 32,
