Barrett lifts bronze
NZPA London Auckland’s Rory . Barrett' rounded off a solid New Zealand performance in the Commonwealth Weightlifting Championships when he! came third in the 110 kg class at Cardiff yesterday. The veteran 35-y ear-old] Barrett added the bronze to his bronze medal from the | Commonwealth Games in Christchurch, and missed the gold in his class by 1.3 kilograms. Barrett had originally intended lifting in the 100 kg cia.s but said last evening: “I went up a class because J thought I had a better chance at a gold there.
The 110 kg class was won by England’s Andy Drzewiecki with a combination of 142.5 kg and 187.5 kg for a total of 330 kg, with Australia’s Bob Edmonds — the silver medallist in the superheavyweight division at the jEdmonton Commonwealth Games — second with il4skg/185kg for the same total. The other New Zealanders, lifting yesterday, were Philip Sue, who won a bronze medal in the highly competitive 67.5 kg class, and the 23-vear-old Mike Barnard, who finished fifth in his ■ first excursion into international competition.
