Rallies doomed?
PA Auckland The international veteran and vintage car rally at Rotorua might be the last held in New Zealand on its scale. Lord Montagu, one of its most important participants, said that the cost of holding the annual event could put it beyond the reach of many old-car enthusiasts. Lord Montagu, whose Beaulieu museum in Hampshire houses his collection of about 250 cars, said the cost of a rally in
far-away countries such as New Zealand worried him. “It cost me $6OOO to ship my Hispano Suiza here and that does not include air fares and accommodation for my wife and myself. “The way things are going this could be the last one held in New Zealand. I hope not because antipodean rallies have a reputation for being very well organised and most enjoyable,” he said. Lord Montagu is vicepresident of the federation that sponsors the rallies.
