The economy

Sir, — New Zealand’s rosy future has been pronounced

(“The Press,” February 23), and I feel convinced it has been produced, no doubt, by that mythical Walter Mitty, champion dreamer of all time, but certainly not by a Prime Minister. Let us be realistic: there is a premium on Australian shares traded in New Zealand, indicating more faith in overseas investment. The world’s financial predators are scanning the New Zealand resources ready to pounce and take the lion’s share. Our own people are too poor to provide the capital. New Zealand may expand, but to the disadvantage of our citizens. Almost 70 years old, uninterested in future myths of chasing rainbows, I am realistically concerned with present problems. Excessive -taxation has been levied to provide superannuation, but the whole amount is confiscated during my absence, if I were to visit the European continent for four months as my way of enjoying my retirement. Yours, etc., (Dr) S. P. ABRAHAM. February 23, 1980.
