Street litter

Sir, —Mrs Mclnerney, Feb, ruary 19, complains of our “litter-ridden” streets and is “appalled” to think that Christchurch claims Adelaide as a sister city. Adelaide of course, claims a similar relationship to Christchurch — a relationship which the Lord Mayor shows no sign of rejecting. On the contrary. Christchurch is not perfect (what city is?) but two much travelled Adelaideans whom I met by chance, recently, volunteered that Christchurch was the cleanest city they had seen, world wide. They assured me that they were not “just being polite” as visitors or in return for the help I gave them. Perhaps there is some way I may also help Mrs Mclnerney. If there is I trust she will telephone me. In any case 1 hope that in other respects she is enjoying her stay and will take back sisterly greetings to the Pleasantest City in Australia from the Garden City of New Zealand. — Yours, etc., W. J. A. BRITTENDEN. Chairman, Sister City Commitee, Christchurch City Council. February 21, 1980.
