Generous cash and trophy sponsorship

This first major fishing contest at the Waimakariri River mouth has attracted generous sponsorship from Jaycee members, the Kaiapoi Workingmens Club and 55 companies and businesses of North Canterbury and Christchurch.

The over-all winner of the senior class, catching the heaviest fish, will receive the Kaiapoi Jaycees Waimak Challenge trophy (above), given by Blackwells sportsgoods, Kaiapoi, and a cash prize of $5OO. The next placed on the north and south sides of the mouth will each receive products valued at $2OO. Another seven prizes will follow in order. The juniors will be aiming for a first prize of products valued at $5O, then three more of decreasing value. The rules state that a fish may be presented for a prize in one section only, and competitors must produce a current fishing licence at the weighing in of acclimatised fish. There are four special prizes for the heaviest fish on a Daiwa rod, or reel, lucky entry number, hard luck and conservation. For this, competitors will be invited to fill in a paper on the day. It is expected the prizegiving will conclude the day at 4 p.m.
