County denies request

The reserves committee of the Paparua County Council last evening declined a request by the Christchurch Speedway Association for preferential treatment.

The association had written to the council asking that it consider waiving the levy on gate-takings, or raise the first $2OO exemption on the takings to $2OOO. As an alternative, the association suggested, the levy cbuld be removed for meetings that ran at a loss. Cr A. Y. Shuker said the association still owed the council money; acceding to the request would only compound the problem. The committee recommended that the application be declined. A plan to improve facilities at Denton Park Oval was deferred until next month’s meeting. The scheme involves alterations to the pavilion, putting in new changing rooms, and adding la medical room at an esti- ! mated cost of $6OOO. Cr Shuker said he was “personally affronted” because he had heard about the i alterations from a rugby player at a hotel, before the matter had been put before the council. The chairman of the committee (Cr C. J. J. Adlam) said discussions had been held with the local rugby club, but no decision had been made. Cr W. J. Baker said that if the work was necessary it should be done immediately while T.E.P, labour could be. used. / •-
