History brought to life
Historic costume and music will be combined in an unusual show that will be presented at the Town Hall Restaurant during the Christchurch Arts Festival. The show, designed and created by Miss Molly Cook, of Wellington, covers the development of fashion from the mid-fourteenth century to the Elizabethan court. Miss Cook, who was awarded the Queen’s Service Medal in the New Year Honours List, is an authority on historic costumes. The “mini-pageant” will include jewellery and accessories, as well as medieval castle banners and standards. The display is part of a full-scale historic pageant
called “Edward to Elizabeth.” Miss Cook has shown the pageant for several years, but this will be its first visit to Christchurch. : Because the full pageant is difficult to mount, a small version will be shown, with entertainment, to make a dinner show.
Alice Graham, a contralto, will model the costumes and sing Elizabethan lute songs. Three Christchurch musicians — David Vine, Katherine Staniforth, and Pamela Keightley — will provide background music. The three-course dinner and show will be held from March 17 to 20. and will cost $12.50.
