Sakharov says he and wife beaten by police

NZPA-Reuter Moscow The,.banished Soviet dissident leader, Andrei Sakharov, in a statement released in Moscow, has said he and his wife-have been beaten by the police in the Soviet closed city to which he has been exiled. The 58-year-old academician said he and his wife, Yelena, were physically ejected from a police station in the Volga city of Gorky last Friday when they went to inquire about a friend who had been detained. beaten around the eyes, Dr Sakharov said. The statement was read out at a press conference held in Dr. Sakharov’s former central Moscow flat.
