Botham hero of England victory
NZPA-Reuter Bombay England defeated India by 10 wickets shortly after lunch on the fourth day of the jubilee cricket test at Bombay yesterday.
The victory salvaged England’s reputation after its disastrous recent series against Australia. The final winning stroke in yesterday's match came from the opener, Geoff Boycott, yielding a boundary and helped England to end the match two runs ahead at 98.
Boycott remained unbeaten on 43 and his partner, Graham Gooch, on 49.
India lost the grip on the match after its batting collapsed in the second innings.'
The English all-rounder, lan Botham, tore holes in the Indian innings to end the match with figures of 13 for 106 and became the first man to score a cenutry (114) as well as claim more than 10 wickets'in . a test.
He claimed his seventh wicket in India’s second’-Innings with his first ball of the morning’s new over when, he had Shivlal Yadav caught behind. India, overnight 148 < for eight, added only one more run before its innings folded.. The run came from the defiant Kapil Dev, who remained unbeaten on 45.
Botham’s feat was matched by the wicket-keeper, Bob Taylor, who claimed 10 victims in the 'match, beating Australian Gil Langley’s record of nine against England at Lord’s in 1956.
Taylor took eight catches off Botham’s bowling in the two innings.
England was left 96 runs to win the match when Idia’s innings ended 14min after tin* start of the fourth day’s play.
