Drivers’ street ban lifted
The Canterbury Drivers Union’s ban on using Stratford Street, Fendalton, has been lifted. The union banned the use of the street last April as a protest against the decision by the Waimairi County Council to prohibit the thrriugh-flriw or heavy traffic. Residents had earlier 'petitioned for such a prohibition.
The union’s secretary (Mr P. R. Liggett) said the union’s executive felt that the union had made its point.
He will write to all local authorities asking that they consult the union before placing restrictions on the use of streets by heavy traffic.
"There is nothing sinister in this,” he said. “If we can co-operate in any way we will do so. We believe if local authorities make restrictions affecting our members they shduld talk to us first.”
