Vizier regaining best form

Special correspondent Hastings The Woodville visitor, Vizier, looks on the verge of regaining his best form and he should prove one of the day’s best prospects in the D. J. Barry Memorial on the opening day of the Poverty Bay Turf Club’s meeting at Gisborne today. A four-year : old bj’ Trophy Case from the stylishly bred Vignette, Vizier has not won since taking the Jackson Stakes at Wanganui just on twelve months ago. . However he is practically useless on anything but firm ground and it is only in the last few weeks that he has had conditions to suit. Vizier was a close third to the smart gallopers, Mac’s Gamble and Ariana, in the Carterton Metric Mile at Tauherenikau on Waitangi Day and has thrived in the meantime.

The top weight, On Show, was an impressive winner on the second day of the Wairoa Meeting but then failed to stay the distance in the 2100 m Wairoa Cup. Back to 1600 m, On Show must be rated a strong chance as should Apostle, another which has done well, on the track on previous visits. Apostle has not raced since finishing second at Ellerslie in late January but with 55kg seems ideally placed to pose a threat to Vizier. The Matamata ownertra i n e r-studmaster, Sam Brosnan, rarely visits Gisborne without gaining some share of the prizes and in Our Princess he has a filly which could win the second leg, the Wi Pere Memorial. The top-weight, Blarney Princess, won a double on the track as a two-year-old, and though she has not struck the same form so far this term will be considered on the "horses for courses” basis.
