No nationalism for veterans

The fervent nationalism which is so often one of the less desirable features of international sports contests will be absent from the world , veteran athletic championships to be held at Queen Elizabeth II Park from January 7 to 14 next year. Entries will be made by clubs and not by countries according to the chairman of the organising committee, Mr John Macdonald. “We are not silly enough to think that there will not be some athelete who will want to compete in their country’s colours, but we are trying to get away from nationalism,” he said.

The plan to call for entries from clubs had the approval of the World Association of Veteran Athletes, Mr Macdonald said.

Relay teams will be made up of club athletes from one country 7 . In a further move away from nationalism, the ceremonial march past will be done in age groups instead of countries. Mr Macdonald commented that the format for the world' games was almost identical to the “dream” Olympics considered ideal by the former Olympic steeplechaser, Chris Brasher, of England.
