N.S.W. Suburban draw
A record second-wicket partnership of 171 runs between Roger Campbell and Philip Agent was the highlight of the match between the northern New South Wales Emu colts and Christchurch Suburban colts, which finished in Christchurch on Sunday.
Stephen Stuart won the toss for Suburban and sent the Emus in to bat on a soft, rain-affected wicket.
From the start, the Emus batsmen attacked, and helped by sloppy fielding and loose bowling, reached 328. A good innings from the opener, James Baker, got the side away to a good start but after a middleorder slump, the Emus were struggling at 190 for eight. However, a rearguard, tearaway innings of 80 from Hank Mclnnes, which included three sixes and 11 fours, pulled the side out of the mire.
At stumps on the first day, Suburban had lost the wicket of
Alan Laurent and was 18 for one. But Campbell and Agent, although both very hesitant and who had many anxious moments, battled on before Agent was dismissed to make the score 189 for two at lunch.
But after the break, the Emus bowling got on top and dominated the bat into submission so that Suburban’s innings closed at 246 for nine. Peter Cantrell finished with the best figures of three for 35, and he was well supported by Mclnnes and Neil Johnston. Scores: —
