New rules on deer farming
Every deer species found 'in the South Island may now be farmed in the South Island and on Stewart Island. Under regulations issued by the Minister of Forests (Mr V. S. Young some restrictions on deer farming still apply in the North Island. There, sika deer may be farmed only in Rotorua, Taupo, and Hawke’s Bay counties. However, all other North Island species, and wapiti, may be farmed on North Island farmland except in prohibited areas. The. prohibited areas are the Coromandel Peninsula and south to the Karangahake Gorge, the Hunua and Waitakere Ranges, Taranaki within 7km of Egmont National Park, ' and Northland north of the Otamatea-Whangarei county boundary, Mr Young said that, the ■possibility of allowing deer farming in Northland was still being discussed. He said the area had always, been free of deer ■arid thbt unique kauri forests’ such' as the Waipoua Forest Sanctuary must be protected. ..
