Radio award trophy
An Auckland industrial designer, Mr Mark Cleverley (right), has won the Mobil Radio Awards trophy design competition. Mr Cleverley’s design, which he titled “The Sil-, ver Mike,” was chosen' from more than 60 entries from all over New Zealand.
The four judges — Messrs Geoffrey Nees, director of the New Zealand Industrial Design Council; Guy Ngan, sculptor, designer, and director of the New Zealand Academy of Fine Arts; John Joyce, programmes administration manager; for Radio New Zealand; and Tim Bayley, public affairs manager of Mobil Oil — were unanimous in their decision, which earned Mr Cleverley first place and the $2OOO prize. A development designer; with Crown Lynn Potteries,
Auckland, Mr Cleverley, said he had found it challenging to choose a symbol which differentiated between radio and television. He based his
design on a stylised microphone. When Mobil Radio Awards, covering 14 categories, are presented in March, the trophy will be presented for the best community project administered by a local radio station.
The awards programme has been devised to recognise the creative skills, expertise and professionalism of the corporation’s broadcasters.
- Encompassing the full range of radio talent, award categories include
commercial programmes and writing, newsreading, drama, music, current affairs and sport. On behalf of the judging panel, Mr Joyce said the winning design was chosen for its simplicity; it embodied the corporate images of both Mobil and Radio New Zealand, without being heavily commercial.
Mr Cleverley has a long string of awards to his credit and is well-known to stamp collectors as the designer of the 1972 Ross Dependency definitive issue.
