Second yacht missing

NZPA Melbourne An air search of the Tasman Sea yesterday found no trace of the New Zealan d-owned sloop Mardi Gras, missing for almost five days. The 12m Mardi Gras, with five pesons aboard, made its last radio report on January 3 when near Maria Island, off the east coast of Tasmania.

Mardi Gras took part in the Sydney to Hobart yacht race and for the return home was competing in the Hobart to Auckland race.

A Royal Australian Air Force Orion aircraft and three chartered light planes yesterday searched off Tasmania.

It is the second big air search in the Tasman for missing yachts in less than a month. The Tasmanian sloop Charleston disappeared in December on a voyage to Sydney to compete in the SydneyHobart race. Off-shore winds continue to hinder the chances of finding the crew of the Charleston.

A private air search of the West Coast for any sign of the yacht or its crew was called oft this week until westerly winds resume.

The organiser of the private search, Mr O. Forster, said in Christchurch yesterday that circumstances had riot changed during the last 24 hours. He said last evening that there seemed little chance of the wind’s changing in the next day or two.
